Does anyone have ideas for a bathroom that has a sunken corner bath with steps....my baby has outgrown her portable bath and I'm trying to figure out what to do short of getting in with her every night...as getting out with a slippery baby is making me nervous).

Cute ... I love your opening paragraph! You are so right ... some "features" are a bit much!

We've had the same travel cot (similar to the "sleepover" version) and its lasted us 6 years and we've used it on both our boys. We found it very handy to have when we went to friends' houses for dinner or vice versa when friends came to dinner ... nice to have some adult time when the kids are tucked up in bed!

We've also travelled with our travel cot as we found it easier to settle our boys in something they were used to rather than hiring them. However, you've made some really valid points about how much room they take up etc.

Consider waiting until you know more about your baby’s interests and personality and what your lifestyle will be like with baby. What you think you want pre-baby may change after you actually have your baby and see what the reality is. If you absolutely must have the $2,000 crib, consider getting a less expensive stroller. Most importantly, if you want the top of the line crib, plan for it and give yourself permission to spend the money and enjoy it. Know where the money is coming from to do all of the start-up stuff: is it from your income, on a credit card, or from your savings? I your situation, you could draw from your savings (emergency fund and./or extra cash in the checking) and just plan to replenish that account over the next 4-6 months.

We also chose the $30 option: soft foam change mat with raised sides to prevent rolling. When he was little we put it on top of a set of draws (wide draws) which kept the nappies et al but now it's on the floor. It's perfect.

Oh, Heather, I simply couldn't imagine what your friend went through. It's always something that plays on your mind when you're pregnant, and naturally think 'it won't happen to me'.

It's great to see support groups in place to help you through the grieving process. No one should suffer silently.

I had a "no cleaning with chemicals" and "no pumping petrol" policy when I was pregnant with my two boys. My hubby this for me and it might sound really "anal" but I figured I was better safe than sorry.

Also, it was nice not to clean for a period of time! LOL!

I love the onesies, Amanda! I remember picking up friends' bubbies and hating how their tops or singlets always come out and their soft little backs end up cold! These are a great idea, I'll keep them in mind for when my bub (finally) arrives!

A change table is pretty obligatory if you want to save your back. We only use beds and floors when nothing else is available.
We bought one from Ikea that converted to shelving when bub is out of nappies and it was very affordable and also went with all the other white furniture. Our only problem is our 16 month old is very tall, so it's hard actually getting him to fit on the table!!

What an excellent article.

Of all the things that money could be wasted on, a fancy nappy change table was one of them. Luckily, we bought a change mat (around $30), and a largish any-purpose plastic see-through container with a handle from Big W ($12) that is large enough to hold the nappies, nappy bags, wipes, cream and talc.

Floor or sofa has worked well for us! (unless you have a precious sofa of course). With floor, bub cannot fall off (ours started wiggling and rolling at just 6 months old). And easy to pick up bub, mat and container in one go and find a spot where the cat is not around to get in the way of events.

Not for everyone but even the lady at the baby store conceded that this was easiest approach (and then helped us spend the money saved elsewhere.....).
